The Search For Everything – Pt 2

// Camila Cabello – Real Friends

Off to Spring Street. To find a subway station, one must be aware of the green globe lamps, it is usually hidden or situated nearby shop entrances, the system is rather confusing for a first timer. One thing about walking alone in NYC is that you don’t feel safe, well, actually it depends on which part of the neighbourhood you’re at. Manhattan is fine, but not in Brooklyn or the Bronx. However, I feel that it is so much safer here than in San Fran or LA. Probably because I have the theory that most of the people carry a weapon or a gun anywhere they go. Make it illegal already, Amerrriccuhh! At times, I wish I was with someone, but the idea of being alone here is comforting, you don’t feel lonely when you’re surrounded by thousands of people, and the best things in life happens when you’re alone, me thinks.

Spent $10 for a 15 minutes train ride towards uptown. I arrived at Grand Central Terminal and suddenly felt like I stepped back in time, oh my it’s unbelievably huge! The details around every corner, and the ceiling constellation are really impressive. I grabbed a bite while time-lapsing people weaving in and out on the upper floor. It really is the center of it all, and for a moment there, I thought I saw a familiar face. It can’t be.

Exited the station, the streets were busy with crowd, rushing back to work after their lunch break. Then I continued uptown on Fifth Avenue from 42nd street. This place is remarkable, you can find almost any designer stores located at Fifth, no wonder it is called the Millionaire’s Row. Each store’s window display is unique and glamorous on its own. Other than that, you can see beautiful architectures, amazing skyscrapers, and churches. I took a peek inside St Partick’s Cathedral, where F. Scott Fitzgerald and Zelda tied the knot, the interior is exquisite.

Turned west on the 54th, and reached MoMA, the house of Van Gogh, Monet, Picasso, Warhol among others. In every cities I visit, I make a point to pop in to any art galleries, especially when I travel with my mother who is an art lover herself, even though I don’t understand art. How do you explain a single line of paint mixed with a few shades of colours on a canvas, and call that a painting? I don’t get it.

Look at Warhol’s work, I really don’t get it, love to see it, but don’t get it. But, to me, any kind of paintings, sculptures, graphics, take a lot of commitment to complete. There’s a certain kind of responsibility in creating even the tiniest piece of art let alone the monumental, extraordinary piece. This is what art does, to create awareness, to engage to people, to create intimacy, to make decisions, to heal wounds. It has a sense of humour and hope. I guess, as humans, we often look at things but we fail to see and understand them properly. There’s freedom in creating art and it often tells us that everything will be alright.

And I keep reminding myself, everything will be alright, everything will be alright.

Until I entered Adrien Piper’s installation – the whole floor dedicated to her, and on every surface of her artwork, lies one important message :

Everything will be taken away.
